Something Booms in Spring: Your Sign to Explore the Netherlands

Vibrant purple flowers in a field near Heiloo, the Netherlands

The days are getting longer, the sun is showing up more often, and—just like that—spring has arrived in the Netherlands. And with it comes a burst of color, life, and opportunities to explore the beauty of this small but vibrant country.

Over the past weekend, I took some time off to soak up the season myself. A friend and I headed to the beach to enjoy a sunny Sunday filled with ice cream, sea air, and a peaceful walk through the dunes. The scent of freshly cut dune grass was invigorating. On the way to Egmond aan Zee, just outside of Heiloo, we stumbled upon fields bursting with tulips and hyacinths in full bloom. Naturally, we had to stop for a quick photo—and some quiet admiration.

That moment reminded me of something simple, yet powerful: this is the time to go outside and let spring do its magic.

Whether you’ve lived in the Netherlands for a while or you’re still settling in as an expat, getting out into nature is one of the best ways to recharge and feel more connected to your surroundings. And there’s no better season to do it than spring.

Not Sure Where to Start? Here Are Some Inspiring Day Trips:

  • The flower fields – Head to the Bollenstreek (near Lisse and Hillegom) or the countryside near Heiloo for an explosion of color. Don’t forget your camera!

  • Amsterdamse Bos – Blossoming trees – Perfect for a casual stroll, right next to the city but worlds away in atmosphere. The cherry blossoms have stopped blooming, but Gemeente Amsterdam mentions plenty of other opportunities to spot some blooming trees (page in Dutch).

  • The Veluwe – If you’re up for a longer adventure, this national park offers forests, heathlands, dunes, and wild deer.

  • Dune walks and beach days – Places like Egmond aan Zee or Zandvoort give you a lovely combination of sea breeze, nature walks, and local cafes.

  • Canal boating in Utrecht or Giethoorn – go for a scenic boat ride and see the Netherlands from a fresh perspective.

Why Spring Adventures Matter

Spending time outside isn’t just good for your physical health—it boosts your mood, sparks creativity, and helps you feel more at home. That’s especially true for expats who may still be adjusting to Dutch life. When you connect with nature and discover local gems, you’re not just sightseeing—you’re building memories and finding your rhythm here.

So here it is, your friendly seasonal nudge: plan a small outing this week. Even a couple of hours in the sun can bring a surprising amount of energy and clarity.
