Reaching Expatations — home

Our story

Reaching Expatations.
A personal beginning.

Before it became a platform, it was our own journey: finding a way to be together, navigating unfamiliar systems, and making the Netherlands feel like home.

Where our paths crossed

We met in Alkmaar while she was in the Netherlands on an exchange program. What began with meeting someone new became a relationship — and, eventually, a question that would shape both our lives: how could we build a future together here?

Being together wasn't simple

When her exchange came to an end, the options for staying in the Netherlands were limited. We found ourselves navigating immigration processes and spending time apart, trying to work out what came next.

A winter reunion in Tbilisi gave us time together again. In September 2023, we finally reunited in Amsterdam and could begin building our life in the same place.

Arriving was only the beginning

Being here didn't mean everything suddenly made sense. Understanding unfamiliar systems, finding opportunities, and bridging cultural differences brought a whole new set of challenges.

Helping someone close to me settle into Dutch life opened my eyes to things I had taken for granted. The practical hurdles and unwritten rules that felt familiar to me could be confusing or exhausting for someone new.

Why we started

From our experience
to a shared purpose.

That experience inspired Reaching Expatations: a way to make those first days, weeks and months in the Netherlands less overwhelming for others.

Today, the platform brings together practical integration tools, useful services, and stories that help people rethink what integration means. Not just for newcomers finding their feet, but also for Dutch locals and colleagues learning to see things from the other side.

Because feeling at home isn't only about knowing the rules. It's also about understanding one another, finding connection, and making space for different perspectives.

From both sides of the dike

Integration is a two-way street.

For newcomers finding their place, and for the people who welcome them. That's the perspective at the heart of everything we build.
